Manchester United must sign new fullbacks

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young have been used as first choice full backs by Jose Mourinho this season. However the reality is that the former wingers simply aren’t good enough to play defensive roles.

Even though Young has had a decent season, and has kept the likes of Mohamed Salah quiet, he isn’t a long-term solution. There have been games where Young’s lack of experience at left back has cost United. On the other flank, Antonio Valencia has struggled with the same issues. He is one of the most predictable players in the league, both going forward and defensively. Nearly every defender knows what Valencia will do when he gets on that right flank, and as a result it has become very easy to stop him.

With Matteo Darmian, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw all set to be sold this summer, United must spend big on new full backs in the summer.

If United are to compete with City next season, they need to bolster their squad heavily. And replacing their ageing wingers who play as full backs would be the perfect place to start for Jose Mourinho.
