Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to sign a new contract with Tottenham should set a real trend. Expect Christian Eriksen to quickly ink a new deal too.

Now that Mauricio Pochettino is set to stay with Tottenham for the long haul you can expect the club to turn their attention towards locking some of their core players up too. Danish maestro Christian Eriksen should be at the top of the club’s list. Expect Eriksen to follow Pochettino’s example and sign a bumper new deal with Spurs in the coming days.

Eriksen probably isn’t the best player in Pochettino’s squad but he might be the most irreplaceable. When he isn’t on the pitch the Spurs attack really suffers. He’s arguably the club’s only player capable of serving as a creative number ten.

That’s precisely why Eriksen found himself with so much playing time this season. He started 37 league matches for Spurs and contributed an impressive total of 10 goals and 10 assists. That allowed him to post an impressive Whoscored.com player rating average of 7.40. That mark put Eriksen second on the team behind only Harry Kane among Spurs regulars.

It isn’t just Eriksen’s talent that makes him the most likely player to re-up with Tottenham next. It’s also the fact that Pochettino had dinner with his talented midfielder on Wednesday. Pochettino certainly enjoys Eriksen’s company but the meal was almost certainly about more than just pleasure.

It’s impossible to think Pochettino wasn’t in Eriksen’s ear about committing his long-term future to Spurs as well. There have been rumblings about the midfielder wanting a move to Barcelona this summer, but nothing of the sort has come from Eriksen directly. He remains very guarded with his public comments about his future.

Look for that to change within the next week. Pochettino didn’t stop in Copenhagen on his way to Barcelona just to see the sights. It was a business trip for the Spurs boss. He wants Eriksen to be at Tottenham as long as he’s the manager. Don’t be surprised to see Eriksen commit his future to Spurs through 2023 this week as well.
