Nacho Fernandez: 7/10

Replaced the injured Carvajal, and shut out Mane who was allowed meager amounts of space down the wing from that point. A fizzing strike against the woodwork was as close as the Senegalese came. A pragmatic performance and a useful player.

Gareth Bale: 9/10

Just wow. No words needed, but I’ll try and describe that goal without undermining its sheer beauty. To convert a chance like that, in a game like the Champions League final, is something only very few can do.

One of those who has done so before stood on the sidelines in awe – Zinedine Zidane as astounded as the rest of the stadium when Bale scored a goal that will be replayed for decades to come.

An overhead kick from a few yards inside the box, the height and technique was mesmerizing. He added another before the end, too, but that was more about Loris Karius’ abysmal goalkeeping than the strike of the Welshman.

It hasn’t been an easy season for Bale, but this puts his name into Champions League folklore forever.
