Left midfield – Anthony Martial

Manchester United wide man Anthony Martial has had masterful moments this term. It hasn’t been regular, however, and a few astounding long range strikes don’t merit a World Cup spot.

His future has been speculated over since the end of the season, and it doesn’t help that Jose Mourinho hasn’t instilled full trust in him.

Didier Deschamps clearly hasn’t either, and Martial will have to be patient to make an impact at the pinnacle of international football.

Centre midfield – Adrien Rabiot

PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot is another excluded Frenchman, and he was far from happy about it.

His immaturity will only deter Didier Deschamps more, and with players such as N’Golo Kante, Blaise Matuidi and Paul Pogba to battle with it is hardly surprising Rabiot missed out.

Rabiot might need a move to a bigger club to prove his worth further, as dominating in Ligue 1 with PSG isn’t the achievement it used to be.

Centre midfield – Jack Wilshere

Probably the most contentious of those that missed out – a closely scrutinised choice by England boss Gareth Southgate.

Leaving out Jack Wilshere means a technical option is also removed, and with Jordan Henderson and Eric Dier both prioritising defensively, it could jeopardise the number of chances Harry Kane gets.

There are various reasons Wilshere could have been included in the England squad, however the salient, and essential, facts are that he hasn’t been fit enough for long enough, and hasn’t performed at a consistent enough level to convince Southgate.

Right midfield – Erik Lamela

Argentina’s vast attacking options meant it was always a doubt Erik Lamela would sneak into a squad packed with talent.

Has struggled at White Hart Lane, but many still believe he hasn’t been given a proper opportunity by Mauricio Pochettino.
