Tottenham have a new chance to keep Toby Alderweireld. The question is whether or not Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep him.

Manchester United’s decision to open the bidding for Toby Alderweireld at £50 million may come back to haunt them. Reports from England claim that the Belgian defender’s representatives have now presented Spurs with a new wage offer. It’s very possible that Tottenham may now hold on to their world-class defender.

Originally, Alderweireld’s representatives were looking to secure a deal paying their client somewhere in the neighborhood of £160 thousand per week. That amount is way out of Tottenham’s price range. Paying a central defender more than Harry Kane was a non starter for Daniel Levy and company.

It seems that Alderweireld has found it difficult to conjure up clubs willing to meet his wage demands. It’s even been rumoured that United balked at his asking price. Now they are offering Spurs the chance to re-sign him for a deal that would just eclipse £100 thousand per week.

That amount isn’t cheap, but it is doable from the Tottenham perspective. The club’s thought process regarding Alderweireld is no longer whether or not they can afford to keep him. Now Mauricio Pochettino must decide whether or not he wants to keep him.

That should be a pretty interesting thought process to observe. It’s unclear whether or not the Spurs gaffer soured on playing Alderweireld last season due to injury, form or his upcoming wage demands. If it’s the latter, it’s very possible the relationship between manager and defender is beyond repair.

If, on the other hand, it was simply an issue of injury and/or form, then Tottenham may elect to meet Alderweireld’s updated demands. The entire idea behind constructing a new stadium was to position the club to pay higher wages. That, combined with the need to emphatically back Pochettino this summer should make re-signing the defender financially feasible.

It’s now up to Mauricio Pochettino whether or not he wants Tottenham to make a significant investment in Toby Alderweireld. If he leaves, fans will inevitably blame Daniel Levy, but that won’t be fair in this instance. It’s the gaffer’s choice.
