World Cup: Five overlooked under-23 players to look out for
Hirving Lozano
PSV signed Lozano from Mexican side CF Pachuca last summer with high expectations based on his time in his home country.
He certainly didn’t disappoint because he helped guide PSV to the title. In 2350 league minutes, he scored 17 and assisted 11, or an average of a contribution per 84 minutes.
Lozano usually plays on the left side as an inverted winger because he likes to cut inside on his stronger right foot. He is an effective finisher as well as being able pick out a pass in a crowded opposition box.
However, he is also an adept crosser as well, so he is an excellent final third threat. His main issue is outside those areas because he needs to work on his passing and is a weak link in build-up play.
He suits Mexico’s high pressing, all-action system with possession won high up the pitch. This is when he can be at his deadliest due to the stretched defensive shape of the opposition. For the national team, he has seven goals and two assists in 1530 minutes.
El Tri have a tough World Cup group, though. Germany will try and dictate play, so Mexico’s pressing will be key in creating high quality chances and disrupting build-up.
The biggest issue will be whether Mexico are able to break down teams in their attacking shape because Sweden and South Korea are likely to sit deep against them. Lozano’s threat from the flanks will be important in creating openings.
