Left centre half: Harry Maguire – 7/10

Probably the most mobile of the defenders. Came out from the back on a couple of occasions, as well as completing his defensive duties (of which there were relatively few).

Looks a good option to start versus Tunisia, a refreshing addition to a well-oiled back three structure.

Centre half: John Stones – 6.5/10

A solid performance from Stones. Got caught out a couple of times, but kept the shape well the majority of the time.

Still unsure as to whether he will begin in England’s opener. Adds youth to the side but struggled for minutes at Manchester City this season.

Right centre half: Phil Jones – 6.5/10

The only survivor from the Nigeria game. Never put together a consistent run in the Manchester United side this term, and might be sidelined by Gary Cahill.

Came under negligible amounts of pressure from the Costa Rican attack, however functional in getting everything out.
