Centre defensive midfielder: Jordan Henderson – 7.5/10

Excellent captain and marshaled the midfield superbly.

Kept possession to slow the tempo down when England could, and ensured the Three Lions had a resolved core to deny the Costa Ricans space in the centre.

Centre midfielder: Ruben Loftus-Cheek – 6.5/10

Impressive from Chelsea youngster. Will probably be a fringe player at best, but can add a unique dimension to the side.

Drove forward from the midfield on a couple of occasions however might not be allowed that sort of room against a better team, on a bigger stage.

Centre midfielder: Fabian Delph – 6.5/10

More of an experiment than anything from Gareth Southgate here. Had to readjust to centre midfield, having played at left back for Manchester City most of the season.

Adapted maturely, but Eric Dier or Dele Alli look the favourites to start in the centre over Delph.
