We might not see the best of Christian Eriksen

As far as Denmark’s chances in the upcoming World Cup go, Christian Eriksen is key.

Like Mohamed Salah for Egypt, the Tottenham midfielder adds a sprinkle of stardust otherwise lacking in the side. His talismanic qualities have been proven on several occasions for both club and country, and this World Cup is his first as a respected international.

He was the difference against Ireland in the vital qualifier to get to the tournament, however he knows better than anyone the competition itself is a sizeable step up.

A hat-trick versus the Irish once again demonstrated his impact for Denmark, and without him the Danes would not have that lethal touch necessary at a World Cup.

But with the weight of a nation’s dreams and aspirations on his shoulders, Eriksen could flatter to deceive.

He has provided some memorable moments for Spurs this term, not least a sumptuous strike in a late-season victory over Chelsea, but he has a larger amount of people to impress this time.

Needless to say Denmark will turn their attentions to defending against France. Peru’s organisation and stubbornness mean it will be tough to find gaps, and Australia can certainly match the Danes on their day.

That leaves Eriksen having to pull the strings in the centre of midfield, as well as being the prevalent creator, and that looks a difficult ask.

Hopefully Eriksen becomes one of the names we remember at the World Cup, but in an even group his influence may not be as significant as Denmark hope.
