Denmark’s opener against Peru will prove crucial

I can see this being a game that is looked back on as pivotal.

Getting off to a good start, especially in a tournament as prestigious as the World Cup, is essential. Many sides have lost their first game, faced a match in the second round against a heavyweight and crashed out with a game to spare.

Neither of these nations want to be in that situation, for obvious reasons, but it is a realistic prospect.

Peru can measure themselves against an esteemed side in Denmark, while the Danes know earning three points early on is important to their qualification chances.

Favourites to advance behind France, Denmark have to be quickest out of the traps to avoid pressure intensifying because of a sluggish start.

Should Peru win, it gives them strong momentum heading into an arduous-looking clash with France, and leaves them with more than a glimmer of hope of getting further than the group stage.

We have seen already how the Peruvians thrive on impetus – a long unbeaten run showing no signs of coming to a halt.

A Denmark victory, however, puts Peru in the desperate situation of needing an unlikely result against France, and also means Age Hareide’s men can secure a knockout spot in another winnable match versus Australia.

That looks the more probable scenario, but as alluded to beforehand Peru certainly shouldn’t be written off.

In short, I think the winner of that game will ultimately go through. At worst it shall considerably propel their probability of reaching the round of 16.
