Nacho Monreal had a terrific season, but it doesn’t change the underlying fact Arsenal need to look into replacements.

For full backs, age can sometimes be the limiting factor. Of course, they tend to go for a lot longer than out and out wingers, however compared to other areas of the pitch, their deterioration happens a lot faster. Nacho Monreal of Arsenal will be no different.

Don’t be fooled, the full back played exceptionally well this season. One of the best in his position, scoring his highest ever goal tally, but Arsenal fans can’t claim the ‘getting better with age’ card.

Truth is, we can see in elements of his game that he’s on a steady downfall. His speed isn’t as potent, although he has never really been known for this trait anyway.

It’s the lack of tenacity which will come as a problem to Arsenal fans. The Spaniard, referred to as ‘La Cabra’, is known for winning possession in the opposition’s half. It may not seem like a big trait, but for the Gunners it is.

Monreal may feel that, as age approaches him, he has no way of completing this task every game. A number of Arsenal’s goals this season have involved the full back.

Of course, he needs to be in positions to contribute to attacking play, and for that you need to be certain you can get back in the case of counter attacks.

Let’s be honest, Arsenal’s attack isn’t renowned for getting back and helping with defensive play. This is why there’s a huge onus on full backs to attack and defend, which Monreal has learned to deal with.

More from Arsenal FC

Bellerin has age on his side, but Monreal does not. The latter is approaching his 33rd birthday next season, which is around the cut-off point for full backs.

This is why it was no surprise to see Arsenal linked with Lukas Klostermann of RB Leipzig. The 22 year old has bags of potential and has the ability to play on either side of defense.

Perhaps as a replacement for Nacho Monreal, or perhaps just to add squad depth. We could see a major reshuffle of the Gunners defense next season, which I can’t deny was needed.

One thing is for certain, though, and that is Klostermann will learn a lot from Monreal. Arsenal’s man has the club in his heart and he will give his all into making sure his position is safe for the future.

Klostermann has a lot to learn, undeniably. However, under the right coaching and mentoring, the full back can be a real success at Arsenal.
