Arsenal vs Aston Villa (4-0), May 30, 2015
After the events in Southampton’s away locker room, Szczesny was relegated to the bench for the majority of the season; however, he would get his opportunity in the F.A. Cup.
The previous season, he was on the bench when Arsenal defeated Hull City in the finals, but in 2015, Szczesny would be on the field.
Aston Villa was outmatched and Arsenal won its second F.A. Cup in a row. For Szczesny, it was his second trophy with the club, but the first trophy in which he played a part in winning.
Two-year loan at Roma 2015-17
With his relationship with Arsenal and Arsene Wenger changed after the 2014-15 season, Szczesny left for Italy and Roma to gain some experience and potentially return as Arsenal’s No.1 goalkeeper again.
At Arsenal, Petr Cech was introduced as the new No.1 goalkeeper. As time passed, Cech proved the calming influence in the back that Arsenal needed and way back for Szczesny looked more unlikely.
The move to Roma proved beneficial for Szczesny, even though his path back to Arsenal was blocked. The 2016/17 season specifically was when Szczesny showed his potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
He helped Roma finish four points behind the Serie A champions Juventus in the 2016/17 season, which was the closest any team has come to dethroning Juventus since their return to the top of Italian soccer.
His performances for Roma piqued the interest of the Italian champions.
