We were treated to an amazing show in the first match-week of Russia’s World Cup.

Late goals, underdogs prevailing, controversial VAR decisions and much more. These are just some of the things fan across the globe were treated to in the opening matches of the World Cup.

We headed into the competition with high expectation, and we weren’t disappointed. Take the first game as an example, Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia, what more could we have asked for? Okay, maybe a better showing from Saudi, but can we really complain after a five goal thriller?

It was then followed up by late drama in the tie between Uruguay and Egypt, as Jose Gimenez rifled a header past the tiresome Egyptian defense.

Need I mention Spain 3-3 Portugal? You get the picture. It’s been excellent, but above all, there has been a number of stars who stand out, so what better way to celebrate than compiling a team of the best players?

GK. Hannes Halldorsson – Iceland

While many may be surprised to see an Icelandic name make the list, those who kept an eye on EURO 2016 won’t be.

Iceland are known for their deep style of play, which of course invites pressure. When pressure is mounted, the goalkeeper needs to keep a clear head, and that’s what ‘Hero Hannes’ did.

He came up against a frightening strike force in Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and co. However, despite conceding an early goal, he looked solid from that point on.

He broke the hearts of Argentina, but won the hearts of many others when he denied Messi from the spot, courtesy of a fine save.

Hannes Halldorsson can hold his head high, if you pardon the alliteration. It was a fine display, and one which will attract the eyes of many. Not bad for a film director, huh?
