Danny Rose should have learned last summer to stop talking to the media. This summer, he may be saying enough to earn his Tottenham exit.

The England squad continues to make positive headlines in Russia, but Danny Rose doesn’t seem to be enjoying himself nearly as much as his teammates. The left back’s recent comments to the media might finally push Tottenham to sell him this summer.

Specifically, Rose says that things have happened to him during club football that “he would not wish on anybody.” He failed to provide any particulars, but it’s clear his time at Tottenham hasn’t always gone smoothly. It’s fair to assume that at least some of these negative events have happened to him during his Spurs career.

In fairness to Rose, he’s certainly undergone some dark times. He’s been the victim of blatant racism on several occasions during his time at Tottenham. No one can blame him for having some negative feelings about those kind of idiots.

However, Mauricio Pochettino is not a manager who deals well with players who possess negative attitudes. That seems to be Rose’s state of mind at the moment. Whether it’s a product of depression (which he openly discussed recently) or simply disillusionment from the game, it’s going to be an issue for him at Tottenham.

At some point, his constant talks with the press are going to make him surplus to requirements for Pochettino. He’s already lost the starting left back position to Ben Davies. It’s not inconceivable that Spurs could move for a younger, more athletic option this summer. Some fans believe Rose can get back to his sparkling 2016/17 form, but that’s debatable. He may never regain the form that made him England’s unquestioned starter at the position.

If that’s not going to happen, either for physical or mental reasons, Tottenham would be wise to part with him this summer. His participation in the World Cup for England has helped rehabilitate his transfer value to some degree. Some other Premier League club would be happy to take on an English international for a transfer fee of somewhere between £25 and £30 million.

Rose hasn’t said enough to burn all of his bridges with Tottenham yet, but he’s certainly flirting with the idea. If he wants to stay at Spurs for the future, he needs to cut down his negative conversations with the media.
