Chelsea: This swap deal involving Alvaro Morata would be incredibly stupid

Chelsea may swap Alvaro Morata for a fellow striker, but the move would be ridiculous.

I’ll be the first to say Alvaro Morata has been lackluster at Chelsea. He has squandered many chances and not made the most of playing with high profile names. However, there may still be a gem to be unearthed, which is why moving on from him would take serious planning.

It’s clear that Morata is beginning to lose hope at Chelsea. He hasn’t hit the heights Antonio Conte expected of him, which is bound to affect his confidence. He would have a chance under a new manager, but he may feel like he’s better off elsewhere.

This is why recent news from La Gazzetta dello Sport will come as no surprise. The outlet believe Chelsea are prepared to involve Morata in a swap deal for Gonzalo Higuain.

This move is a bad idea

Let’s face it, this move sounds terrible. Chelsea would be replacing one frustrating striker with another.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Juventus would get the better end of the deal though, and it’s probably what Morata would want.

Morata still has time to learn, which he seems to be doing. The start to his career hasn’t been the best, but he’s still a few years off his peak. If he moves abroad and becomes a real world beater, then Chelsea will look silly once more.

Player comparison

Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain do share similarities. They’re both very versatile, but prefer to use their frames to their advantage.

Morata is more likely to compete for aerial duels, where Higuain can also win shoulder to shoulder challenges with anxious defenders.

However, the main similarity between the two is their inability to perform on the big stage. Granted, they’ve both had a few good games against big teams, but never consistently. More often then not, they lose their cool.

To conclude, I think selling Morata would still be a positive sign, despite his potential. He isn’t cutting it at Chelsea, so the club would be right to sell him. However, in exchange for Higuain? No, most definitely not.

Chelsea should look at other alternatives on the market. Preferably somebody young, but maturity will be important. Of course, Michy Batshuayi is still very much a contender, he just needs to feel comfortable under the coaching of Maurizio Sarri, or whoever manages Chelsea next season.
