England will come up against Colombia in the round of 16 of the World Cup, and Gareth Southgate’s progress rests in the hands of this game.

It’s been a long time since England had a competent manager. After consecutive failures in Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce, they may have just that in Gareth Southgate.

Southgate has shown immense improvement to a number of the England stars. The likes of Jesse Lingard and Harry Maguire all look exceptional under his guidance.

However, it’s tough to judge this England side. They have yet to face a real side, with the Belgium game being completely meaningless, if we’re being honest.

Don’t underestimate the Colombians

Colombia shouldn’t be taken lightly, as they are perhaps the hardest team England has faced so far.

The likes of James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao all provide threat going forward, especially on the counter attack. This is something England’s back three needs to be wary of, and make sure they don’t make any mistakes.

Of course, the Colombians love to make the most of any opportunity. The likes of Kyle Walker and Harry Maguire must be defensively disciplined to not give them any chances to dive, as England has already given away one penalty so far.

It’s now or never for the Three Lions

If England ever want to be taken seriously, they need to take advantage of this route. They were lucky to be given the easier route to the final, but nothing is easy when it comes to England.

If they don’t progress, then all their work will amount to nothing. There will be no forgiveness from the fans, who are out in full voice.

A potential exit would be more heartbreaking than when they were edged by Iceland in EURO 2016. However, they have the tools needed to avoid this outcome, should they have a good day at the office.

Prediction: England 2-2 Colombia (Colombia to advance)

A common theme of the knockout rounds has been late drama. It would be just England’s luck to be taken to penalties, given their abysmal record.

Despite all the ‘it’s coming home’ shouts, I can’t seem England progressing. It would be embarrassing if they do so, but it’s only due to the heavy expectation they set when they beat Panama. Colombia are a good side, and I think they will edge England.

Let’s hope I’m wrong.
