Mesut Ozil should quit playing for Germany claims father
By Kian Long
It wasn’t a fruitful World Cup for Mesut Ozil and Germany.
The world champions will need to give this title to another country, as Germany bowed out of the World Cup in the group stage of the tournament. They set themselves up for a tricky tournament when they lost to Mexico early on, with Mesut Ozil receiving heavy criticism.
They then came back late on against Sweden, but it all resulted in nothing as they were humiliated at the hands of South Korea.
Heading into the tournament, many German fans were booing Mesut Ozil for his involvement with Turkish president Recept Tayyip Erdogen.
This pretty much set the tone for his tournament. Fans felt Ozil was to blame for Ozil’s loss to Mexico, which subsequently resulted in his absence from the Sweden game.
Speaking with Bild, Mustafa Ozil, father of Mesut, raised his concern on the treatment of his son.
"“It’s always said that if we win, we win together, but if we lose, we lose because of Ozil. He’s booed and put up as a scapegoat – I completely understand if he is offended.” – Mustafa Ozil (via football.london)"
Is Mesut Ozil unfairly criticized?
Many accusations are thrown Ozil’s way, but when you watch him week in week out, it’s hard to see where they come from.
I think Mustafa was correct when he was speaking about his son. Whenever Germany or Arsenal have a bad game, it’s always said to be Ozil’s fault – 99% of the time.
But why is this? Ozil is undeniably one of the best players in the league, and even in the world on his day. He doesn’t deserve such heavy criticism.
A new player under Unai Emery
Unai Emery was appointed as Arsenal boss this summer, something which will take some time for Ozil to get used to. However, it will be worth it.
Emery always take charge at whatever club he manages, not allowing his players to dictate how things are run. While this may seem like a given, there are many examples at top-level clubs where this isn’t the case.
Ozil needs this stern kick up the backside in order to fix the flaws in his near-perfect game. Emery is the right man for this.
Then he will prove all his critics wrong, and remind the world why the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo loved playing with him.
