Signing Alisson Becker is a huge statement of intent from Liverpool

Liverpool have made their fourth signing of the summer as they prepare for an assault on the league.

The goalkeeping situation has been a major talking point for Liverpool ahead of the new season. Loris Karius had a disastrous performance at the worst possible time because he made two major mistakes in the Champions League final.

This will have naturally affected his confidence as well as having a large impact on his reputation among fans and the rest of the team. Simon Mignolet is just as unreliable while Danny Ward is the subject of a bid from Leicester City.

Therefore, bringing in Alisson is hugely significant for the club because it is a clear attempt to solve the biggest problem they currently have in terms of personnel.

Having success in this area would arguably be the final piece of the puzzle and should allow them to challenge for the Premier League as well as on multiple fronts.

David De Gea showed the importance of a top goalkeeper in the Premier League last season with the multiple times he bailed out Manchester United.

The Jurgen Klopp effect.

Jurgen Klopp has implemented his vision successfully with an entertaining playing style which has revolutionised the club since he joined in 2015.

The only thing lacking is silverware with three losses in finals during that period including the 3-1 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League back in May. They finished 25 points behind Manchester City in fourth place, so there is a large gap to make up in the league.

Alisson improves the spine of the team and should have the knock-on effect of easing the worries of the defence due to being an excellent shot-stopper. This increases the solidity of the team which works well with their attacking prowess.

The front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane made up for some structural deficiencies last season. Therefore, having a solid platform to work from will only make them better by improving their consistency, and Virgil Van Dijk also has an important role in this improvement.

Fabinho and Naby Keita are key upgrades in midfield. The Brazilian provides ball circulation which should ease their issues against low blocks while also ensuring they can control games through possession when energy levels are low.

Keita is an excellent attacking tool due to having the adaptability to break through various opposition defensive styles.

Xherdan Shaqiri has the potential to be a bargain because he was signed for just £13 million. He mainly provides them with attacking depth unless Klopp intends to mould him into a midfielder such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s role last season.

These signings complement well with the squad already at Klopp’s disposal. It will be tough to catch up with high-flyers Manchester City after they dominated the Premier League last season.

However, the Reds had the better head-to-head record with three wins in four games in all competitions.

They were the only side to beat the Citizens multiple times last season. Combine that with season-long consistency and it’s an interesting blend. These signings don’t guarantee success, but they fit in well with Klopp’s style as well as the squad needs.

Alisson is the most important part of that. Therefore, Liverpool should at the very least mount a significant challenge on the league.
