Bayern Munich has signed Alphonso Davies for a possible 20 million euros from Vancouver Whitecaps.

Alphonso Davies, a 17-year-old Liberian-Canadian born in a refugee camp in Ghana, has been a bright light in MLS and Canadian soccer.

He is set to break the MLS transfer fee record set by Jozy Altidore when he moved to Villareal from the New York Red Bulls in 2008.

The move has been in the works for some days now and has been finalized today.

Davies will remain with the Vancouver Whitecaps for the rest of the season. The transfer is the first of its kind for MLS and Canadian soccer.

About Alphonso Davies

Davies has been on the radar of followers of the MLS and Canadian soccer for some time even though he is still only 17-years-old.

He is an immigrant of Liberia by way to Ghana and arrived in Canada with his family at the age of five.

Positive signs

Davies has been a bright spot for the Whitecaps this season as they currently sit ninth in the MLS Western Conference standings and has been awarded a spot on the 2018 MLS All-Star roster that will play Juventus on August 1, 2018, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Davies made his debut for the Whitecaps in 2016 as a 15-year-old two years ago and became a regular squad player during the 2017 season.

Canadian soccer has never seen a player of Davies’ ability and potential in its entire history and his transfer to Bayern Munich is a landmark for the sport in Canada.

International promise

Already with six international caps to his name, Davies will certainly be a fixture in the Canadian men’s soccer team for years to come. He made his debut in 2017 in a friendly against Curaçao a week after passing his Canadian citizenship test and officially becoming a Canadian citizen.

Since his first international cap, he has gone on to make an impact for Canada scoring three times at the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup winning the Bright Future Award, Golden Boot, and was named to the tournament’s Best XI as a 16-year-old.

Young players from other CONCACAF nations, like Americans Christian Pulisic and Weston Mckennie and Jamaican Leon Bailey, are currently making a name for themselves in the Bundesliga. Davies will look to follow in those players’ footsteps and do the same.

Maybe most impressive, Alphonso Davies helped Canada secure the honour to co-host the 2026 World Cup when he spoke in front of the FIFA World Congress talking about his family’s story which has led him to represent Canada proudly on the soccer pitch.
