It’s dangerous to draw too many conclusions from a preseason friendly, but Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Roma was very instructive for Spurs fans.

Tottenham’s match against Roma yesterday didn’t start out very well for Spurs. Roma scored the first goal in the match, but then Spurs put their foot on the accelerator. Mauricio Pochettino’s squad romped to a 4-1 lead at the break and neither side broke through in the second half.

Of course, the result of this match is much less important than what we were able to learn about the players who were involved. This piece will cover five lessons Tottenham fans can take from the fixture. We start with a bright young midfield prospect whose stock is clearly on the rise.

5. Luke Amos deserves a quality loan

Some Tottenham fans are ready to hand Amos a spot in the starting XI, but that’s much too ambitious. The 21-year-old Englishman did look very solid against Roma though. He showed he clearly has the talent to ultimately develop into a regular for Pochettino.

That doesn’t mean he’s ready to take over for Mousa Dembele. His energy level is admirable, but he still has the body of an adolescent. He’ll need to add quite a bit of muscle if he wants to stick as a midfielder for Spurs.

The best thing for Amos would be to receive a productive loan this year. Ideally, he would get an opportunity to play regular football for a Premier League club fighting at the bottom of the table. At the very least, he needs to get a move to a Championship side that plays good football week in and week out.

Amos deserves credit for working hard this summer to force his way into the club’s long-term plans. He isn’t quite ready for the senior squad yet, but he showed real potential against Roma.
