Manchester United’s transfer business, or the lack of it has to many fearing that the Red Devils may not challenge for the league title this season.

Manchester United have brought in Fred and Diogo Dalot this summer. But after a quiet July, they face a race against time to conclude their transfer business.

The Old Trafford manager Jose Mourinho revealed earlier this week that he wants two new signings, thought to be a centre back and a right winger.

United’s biggest priority for the rest of the transfer window should be to sign a new right winger. While United are heavily loaded on the left side, their options on the other flank are scarce.

What’s the Mata?

More from Manchester United

Juan Mata has been used on the right wing by United, but the Spaniard’s poor return of three goals and seven assists in 40 appearances last season means that he cannot be trusted to be a regular starter anymore.

Mata just doesn’t have the pace, strength or dribbling ability to get past opponents down the flank.

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all prefer to play down the left wing. While Jesse Lingard is more of a number 10.

All of United’s attacking players prefer to cut inside, making the area around the box heavily populated. While the flanks are often left vacant, leading to a lack of crosses and chances created for Romelu Lukaku.

And that makes signing a new right winger even more necessary. United desperately need a traditional winger who can cross the ball and create chances for their star striker.

Mourinho’s teams have always had industrious, tireless and hard-working wide players and there’s no doubt that he will be looking to add a wide man to his squad before the end of the transfer window.

So, who could they sign?

There aren’t too many options for United to choose from. It looks unlikely that Gareth Bale will move to Old Trafford this summer. So that leaves Willian, Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic as the main options for the Red Devils.

The latter duo impressed in Croatia’s run to the World Cup final. But it remains to be seen if United would be willing to pay up the amount required to secure their services.

After five years of failing to challenge for the league title, this season is very important for Manchester United. Their transfer business has been disappointing so far, and with just 15 days to go till the window closes, they must bolster their squad quickly.
