The Uruguayan striker is seen as an excellent option to attempt to replicate Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring output.

Edinson Cavani had another strong season with PSG as he scored 40 goals and his team won the domestic treble. It was a disappointing season as a team because they were knocked out of the Champions League at the round of 16 stage by Real Madrid.

Neymar’s arrival appears to have unsettled Cavani as shown by the disagreements near the start of the season. They also have Kylian Mbappe who is one of the top talents in world football and is on course to become one of the best in the world. Therefore, Cavani may be surplus to requirements without it being his fault even though he is one of the top strikers in world football.

According to AS, Real Madrid are surprise suitors for the 31-year-old. They have been linked with a multitude of stars including Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard. However, they appear unable to pry those players away or unwilling to pay the high fees, so they are starting to look elsewhere.

This is likely to be a stop-gap solution for the next few seasons until the right player becomes available. It would be worrying if it isn’t because Cavani is only two years younger than Ronaldo, and he’s likely to start declining soon. Bringing in an experienced striker to replace such a key component of the squad over the last few years is a good solution, though, because Cavani can produce similar numbers and is unlikely to feel the pressure like a younger player would.

His numbers show his consistency because he has scored at least 25 goals across all competitions in the past eight seasons, which covers his time at Napoli and PSG. He would work well within Julen Lopetegui’s system because he is constantly making dangerous runs and finding pockets of space. His finishing has been criticised at times, but he has a habit of making his way into dangerous positions at the right time.

Defensively he is also useful as well because he presses intelligently and tracks back when needed to put pressure on players in the midfield third. He also drops deep to act as an outlet and spread play. Therefore, he would be the ideal focal point of the attack under the new Los Blancos manager. He’s unlikely to be cheap even though he is the wrong side of 30.
