Manchester United are in a hurry to sign a centre-back. Harry Maguire was their top choice. But it seems like Yerry Mina is more likely to move to Old Trafford this summer.
Jose Mourinho has been vocal about the lack of transfer activity over the past month. The United boss was keen to add a defender to partner with Eric Bailly and bring a forward who could provide back-up for Romelu Lukaku in case of fatigue.
But both his wishes haven’t come true yet and the transfer deadline is just a week away. According to reports, Manchester United are focused on bringing in a central defender before the transfer window slams shut on August 9.
Toby Alderweireld was Mourinho’s first choice to improve his defence. But Tottenham proved to be really tough negotiators and Manchester United officials decided to back off. English defender, Harry Maguire caught the eyes of the Red Devils with his impressive performances at the World Cup.
Leicester City is keen to hold on to him and are demanding £60 million for the defender. Another World Cup star, Yerry Mina seem to on United’s radar at the moment.
Here is why Yerry Mina could prove to be a better buy than Maguire
The Colombian International wouldn’t cost heavy on Manchester United’s pocket. The Mirror suggests that Barcelona are willing to part ways with Yerry Mina for just £35 million.
On the other hand, Maguire, who is two years older than Mina, would cost nearly £60 million. This is excluding wages where the Barcelona would surely demand less considering he is in desperate need of playing time.
In terms of performance, Yerry Mina and Harry Maguire had a pretty good time at the World Cup this summer. But the Colombian had the better tournament in terms of number. His three goals in the Group Stages were crucial for the South American.
The 23-year old is an excellent header and is a big threat on corners. Manchester United have been able to win a lot of corners over the past seasons, but have lacked the ability to convert them into goals. Mina could add a couple of goals next seasons which could prove the difference in the title race.
Jose Mourinho’s “Park the Bus” tactic could suit Yerry Mina really well. With Colombia, he was forced to dig deep on a number of occasions, especially against England. He is also known for starting attacks from the defence.
Mina completed three long balls per game and managed an 89.2% passing accuracy at the World Cup. The Colombian is very efficient in winning and moving the ball in quick transitions.
