No one has improved their stock with Mauricio Pochettino this summer more than Luke Amos. The 21-year-old midfielder now has a chance to stick at Tottenham.

No one outside of Luke Amos’ family and close circle of friends could have seen this transformation coming. He was always regarded as a decent prospect at Tottenham, but the idea of him joining the senior squad this year was far-fetched when preseason began. Now, the 21-year-old youngster looks to be a firm part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans.

Not only is Amos very likely to open the season in Pochettino’s squad, he’s also going to get a bumper new contract from the club. His previous deal was set to expire at the end of 2019, but Spurs are anxious to hand him a new five-year contract. That’s quite an accomplishment for a player who entered the preseason with relatively low expectations.

Amos has made such terrific progress by taking advantage of the injury crisis in Spurs’ midfield. Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier are still recovering from their efforts during the World Cup. Harry Winks and Josh Onomah both missed the US tour while recovering from injury. Frenchman Moussa Sissoko sustained a knock while in America which opened up even more game time for Amos.

Of course, Amos had to seize the opportunity given to him. He did so by playing the midfield position just like Pochettino would like. He’s never going to be a tremendous goal scorer or a physical force in defence, but his energy and activity can do a lot for Spurs. Amos claims he patterns his game after Chelsea star N’Golo Kante and it’s easy to see that in the way he plays.

That isn’t to say Amos is ready to become the best defensive midfielder in England, but he does have some of the traits that make Kante great. Specifically, his work rate and willingness to make runs from the midfield can be a huge asset to Tottenham this season.

In a perfect world, Amos would get a high quality loan this season to adjust to the speed and physicality of the Premier League at a smaller club in England’s top flight. The combination of his play in the preseason and the lack of healthy bodies in Tottenham’s midfield make that impossible. Credit Amos for being the player who did the most to advance his position with the club this preseason. He’s the big winner from Spurs’ trip to the United States.
