Manchester United are reportedly willing to offer Anthony Martial to Bayern Munich in exchange for Robert Lewandowski.

Manchester United need to be focusing on strengthening for the season ahead, in which they will aim to take back the dominance held by rivals Manchester City. To do this, they need to bring in more players and keep their stars.

According to the Mirror though, this may not be the case. They report United are weighing up the option of offering Anthony Martial to Bayern Munich, to aid their pursuit of Polish talisman Robert Lewandowski.

Why chase a striker?

More from Manchester United

Pursuing a striker doesn’t make much sense to me, personally. United have Romelu Lukaku, who will be full of confidence after his terrific World Cup run. The same can’t be said for Lewandowski, I must add…

Romelu Lukaku is one player which Jose Mourinho hasn’t fallen out with (I know, there IS one). The two actually have a good connection, bringing in Lewandowski may jeopardize that.

Lukaku listens to everything Mourinho is saying, and the Belgian is certainly improving. A stellar season could be on the horizon for him should he play his cards right, but seeing United interested in another striker will inevitably knock his confidence.

That’s more like it.

A conflicting report from Bild has surfaced, and it makes a lot more sense. They report that a move for Jerome Boateng will take place instead, with Martial still involved.

This makes more sense to me because the central defensive position is one which is in more dire need of a replacement than the striking option. The only impressive defender United have at the moment is Eric Bailly, so a reinforcement would be beneficial.

United will probably get a bit of cash from this deal as well, which may even see them land another player before the window comes to a close.

They have been linked with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld for quite some time now, but it doesn’t look like the Belgian will budge any time soon.

Boateng ages at 29 years old, which is a healthy age for a central defender. The World Cup winner will bring an array of experience from the top level, and help his defensive counterparts.

He’s a winner at heart, which means Mourinho will admire him. Boateng joining would be frightening for Premier League rivals, as it’s not easy to get past him. Unless your name is Lionel Messi, of course.
