Manchester United look to have landed Toby Alderweireld, but it’s received quite the mixed reaction.

The Belgian center back has been linked with a Manchester United move for quite some time now, but the Red Devils failed to negotiate with Tottenham’s Daniel Levy.

But, according to reports, the deal looks to be close to completion, and Alderweireld could be announced as a United player before the window comes to a close.

Many have been slating United’s business, saying the Manchester club has rushed this deal. But fear not, United faithful, because the defender will soon prove these doubters wrong.

Plenty of experience

More from Manchester United

Ageing at 29 years old, there is never a better time to sign a central defender. Don’t be fooled though, because Alderweireld has played for a multitude of high-end clubs during his career so far.

Beginning life at Ajax, the Belgian learned plenty about defending in one of the best defensive systems. It was here where he signed his first professional contract, playing a total of five seasons with the Dutch club.

His performances were that impressive, he landed a move to La Liga. Atletico Madrid are also known for their tight defensive structure, and he only added to his footballing knowledge with the club from the Spanish capital.

Time didn’t go as smoothly on the pitch for him, though. He was soon sent out on loan to Southampton, and his Premier League rebirth began.

He can give tremendous thanks to Mauricio Pochettino for regaining his belief, as well as getting the discipline to focus on getting back on track. Three seasons and just over eighty league appearances with Spurs, he is now ready for a new adventure.

From one approach to the other

It may take Alderweireld a little bit of time to get used to Jose Mourinho’s approach, should the Portuguese manager even stay in Manchester.

What differs him from Pochettino is his inability to man manage certain types of players. He demands respect from his colleagues, something which Alderweireld has never shown a lack of in the past.

To some this could be daunting, but I’m sure the Belgian will notice the benefits, and aim to reap them as he nears the peak stages of his career.

Whether he’ll have his eyes set on getting one over on Pochettino remains to be seen. I’m sure if that is the case, then Mourinho won’t be the type to refuse help.
