3. Front three

Liverpool’s forward trio carried them to a Champions League final with 30 goals in that competition and 91 in all competitions. Mohamed Salah broke the record for goals scored in a 38 game Premier League season with 32. It was a stunning first season at Liverpool as he formed a great understanding with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

The Egyptian is unlikely to replicate last season because it was so unique and it contrasts with his number for other clubs in past seasons. Although it isn’t impossible because Liverpool’s system could suit him perfectly. However, the front three will still be a deadly attacking weapon even if Salah isn’t as prolific.

They are the kings of transition due to how quickly they can act on the move and the chemistry they have with each other which translates to intelligent runs off the ball to drag away opposition players and stretch a makeshift defensive shape.

They will benefit from having a midfield that is better at breaking through the opposition to provide them with service, especially Keita who will link up well with them due to his dynamic dribbling.

Klopp’s 4-3-3 system is reliant on them being the first line of the defence, so they lead the press and ensure that teams have an interrupted build-up stage. This causes turnovers in dangerous areas to create high quality chances.

Firmino is the key to this because he also tracks back defensively and often wins the ball back in the midfield third when the opposition have manoeuvred around or through the press. His work rate is pivotal in ensuring the team is a cohesive unit rather than separate parts.

Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge provide talented rotation options, so that the forwards can be rested. Keeping them fresh is key because they are the spearhead for an assault on the league and without their firepower the team struggles offensively.
