A solid World Cup showing has Mateo Kovacic on the move

With the exception of Jorginho, Chelsea have been relatively quiet on the transfer market this summer. The Premier League is due to close off their incoming transfers on August 9th, so the blues know they have little time left.

The club is really letting their transfers go until the last minute, but they may be getting a few notable players that are worth the wait. One of those players is Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

Is Kovacic the right man for Chelsea?

More from Chelsea FC

Kovacic has been forcing a move out of Madrid since he returned from the World Cup in Russia. He felt he did not get enough playtime with Los Blancos and subsequently has asked to leave the club.

Chelsea are answering this call, but not in a permanent way. The London club are close to signing Kovacic on a season long loan deal. This would be huge for manager Maurizio Sarri’s system.

Kovacic is just the type of player Sarri wants running his midfield three in the 433 formation. With a nice blend of skills, passing, dribbling, and defensive work, Kovacic fits the central midfielder role perfectly.

Starting Kovacic with Kante and Jorginho gives Chelsea one of the most frightening midfield trios in the Premier League. In a system where passing and counter attacks create a bulk of the chances, Kovacic’s addition will only add to the fire power.

The one problem with this loan deal is that it has been reported that there is no option to buy with this deal. This means Kovacic will return to Madrid regardless of his form this season with Chelsea.

This is not the best news for the blues, but getting Kovacic in the squad at all should be their number one priority. He may not be the blockbuster signing that a lot of clubs are landing, but he is a huge improvement to the midfield.

Sarri has a lot of solid options for his team, and with the Premier League season drawing ever closer, Chelsea is starting to shape into a real contender.

Do you think Kovacic will succeed under Sarri?
