Tottenham Hotspur could be for sale after summer of inactivity
Tottenham’s failure to make a signing this summer may have a very simple explanation. Spurs could easily be up for sale this year.
Spurs fans all over the globe are desperate for an explanation for why Daniel Levy and company did nothing in the summer transfer window. When Mauricio Pochettino signed his contract extension early this summer it certainly seemed to portend serious investment from the club. Unfortunately, not a penny was spent to bring new blood into the squad.
Some fans claim it’s just Levy and company being cheap. That’s certainly possible, but this would take thriftiness to an entirely new level. After all, it’s the first time since the institution of the current transfer window system in 2003 that a Premier League club haven’t made a single move. Predictably, that’s made Tottenham fans the target of quite a few jokes today.
There’s also a reasonably theory floating about that it’s just a byproduct of rising stadium costs. The circus that is Brexit definitely inflated construction costs for the club. The lack of investment in the squad this summer could be a simple reaction to a change in the price of steel and other building materials.
Neither of those explanations really rings true though. There’s a much more seismic move that could be afoot. Very simply, ENIC could be preparing to sell Spurs within the next 12 months. There are quite a few reasons to buy into this line of thinking.
First, the completion of the new stadium will make Tottenham’s value as a club higher than it’s ever been. If ENIC subscribes to the theory of selling high, now is the time to divest Spurs from their portfolio. The potential revenue stream coming from the NFL could also make the club a very attractive commodity. It’s distinctly possible that the idea of that revenue stream will be greater than the money it produces in actuality.
Preparing to sell the club also would explain the great lengths Tottenham went to tie down their biggest stars to new contracts this summer. Pochettino, Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and others all were rewarded with new five-year contracts. Securing their respective futures will allow ENIC to assure potential buyers that the club will be stable for the foreseeable future.
For the record, no club official has given any indication that Tottenham will be put up for sale in the future. This is purely an example of making an educated guess based on the club’s behavior this summer. Time will tell whether or not Tottenham are truly going to change hands in the next 12 months.
