Hugo Lloris-9

Tottenham players were right to congratulate Lloris when the final whistle blew. He was Spurs’ Man of the Match. The French captain made excellent saves to keep his team in front when Newcastle were pressing for an equalizer in the second half.

What you won’t see in the post match stats is how well Lloris did to cancel out attacks before they could really begin. His “sweeper keeper” abilities were on full display in this match. Lloris came out of the box to clear danger away on several occasions. He looked every bit the part of World Cup winner against the Magpies.

Harry Kane-5

Kane’s inability to score goals in August continued in this match. That didn’t tell the whole story though. Kane can play well without putting the ball into the back of the net. Unfortunately, the rest of his game was missing in this fixture too.

Some fans will put that down to World Cup fatigue, but his energy levels actually looked pretty good. Kane just seemed a step slow. He got some chances on the ball, but he never seemed capable of making the right pass or correct finish. His holdup play did help Spurs at times, but that’s not enough contribution for a player of his quality. Tottenham can take comfort in the fact they were able to win a match where their talisman didn’t really show up.
