We are less than a week away from the start of a new Serie A season.

With that, it’s time to start making some predictions for the upcoming season. Serie A has emerged as one of the most exciting leagues in the world. They were second in goals per game last season and brought more attacking talent into the league this summer. With Ronaldo’s entrance into the league, Higuain’s move to AC Milan, and the continued development of Serie A’s younger talents we should be in store for a thrilling Capocannoniere race.

This year’s Capocannoniere race will feature 4 players who have already held the title. That includes last year’s co-title holders and the man who holds the single-season record for goals scored. There’s the possibility of Ronaldo winning the top scorer award in the third league of his career or that Mauro Icardi or Ciro Immobile could join rarified air with a third Capocannoniere win. We could also see a new star overtake the old guard to break into the race this season.

While the league winner has remained consistent over the last seven years, we have to look back even further than that to find the last player to be the capocannoniere in consecutive seasons. Whether we get a repeat winner or some new blood in the race there is sure to be plenty of intrigue. Will we see Immobile or Mauro Icardi replace Antonio Di Natale as the most recent player to retain the title? Will Gonzalo Higuain or Edin Dzeko reclaim the title they each once previously held? Will we see a new entrant take home the title of top scorer in Italy?
