Top 5 candidates to win 2018-19 Capocannoniere
By John Vaccaro
1. Mauro Icardi
Icardi was just about unstoppable last year, scoring nearly 1 goal per appearance and only finishing one off of the league lead. Icardi has been steadily improving throughout his tenure at Inter. Along with his improvement he has seen a scoring increase each of the last two years. At 25 years old we may not have seen the best of Icardi yet. He has already showcased the pace and finishing ability to take over games for Inter. If he continues to improve he could hold the title of Capocannoniere for some time to come.
The potential for further improvements coupled with the additions of Radja Nainggolan and Keita Balde Diao means that we could see the best season of Icardi’s career next year. If Inter does manage to add Luca Modric as well then Icardi would have one of the best midfields in the world behind him. He will also have a plethora of talented wings sending crosses into the box for him to get on the end of.
Qualifying for Champions League will be no easy task in Serie A this year and that means Icardi will need to start almost every game for Inter down the stretch. While I don’t think he’ll quite reach the record of 36 goals this season, I do believe we will see Icardi break the 30 goal threshold for the first time in his career. That should be enough to become only the 9th player to hold the title 3 times and the first since 2010-11 to win it in consecutive years.
We will see a star born in Serie A this year and he will go home with the title of Capocannoniere this season.
