Real Madrid suffered a disappointing loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, which resulted in worry over the coming season.

With La Liga yet to kick off, Real Madrid already find themselves in a troubling position. They lost to their arch rivals and La Liga counterparts Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, showing many signs of defensive frailties in the 4-2 loss. Although the Super Cup is not the be-all or end-all of how a season will commence, you can see the worry given Real Madrid lost to Atletico of all teams.

Julen Lopetegui needs to strengthen, but he needs to be smart about it. According to the Daily Star, Real Madrid are hoping to secure the signature of Marcos Alonso from Chelsea before the transfer window ends.

Chelsea will be reluctant to sell.

More from Real Madrid

Given that the English transfer window shut last week, Chelsea won’t be able to bring in a replacement for Marcos Alonso.

Although he’s not the most pivotal member to Maurizio Sarri’s setup, he’s definitely an important member of the squad. Losing him won’t have too many detrimental impacts, but they will still look towards avoiding this from happening.

Besides, given Real Madrid’s pursuit of Eden Hazard, the Chelsea officials may be growing tired of hearing from Florentino Perez and company. One thing’s for sure, it will be interesting for the neutrals to see how this saga pans out.

What will Marcos Alonso bring to the table?

Much like Marcelo, his main role is an attacking full back, but he is also incredibly versatile. It’s his versatility which probably attracted the attention of Real Madrid, as they look to become a real defensive unit.

Playing under Antonio Conte last season, Alonso learned to play the centre back role as well as pushing to play in midfield. While his best position is obviously at left back, it’s unlikely he’ll be able to get in ahead of Marcelo anytime soon. That said, not only will his versatility be an asset to Madrid, but also to himself.

Personally, I can’t see Madrid pulling the deal off. The market isn’t open for ever and Chelsea aren’t likely to risk losing a star of theirs, especially now the new English transfer deadline day is up. Obviously, now I’ve said that, they’re more than likely to go and prove me wrong so place your bets.

Do you think Real Madrid can pull of their pursuit for Marcos Alonso?
