LB: Alex Sandro 8.5/10

Alex Sandro was never really troubled on his side of the defense and he made the biggest contribution of the day. It was Sandro’s cross that created the winning goal. Sandro can always be expected to control his side of the defense, but today it was the opposing half that he made his big contribution. He didn’t make any glaring mistakes defensively and made a good contribution going forward.

CB: Leonardo Bonucci 6.5/10

Bonucci played well in his return to Juve, but made one glaring error. He left Chiellini alone in the middle of the box to cover two players making runs, eventually ending in the header that gave Chievo their first goal. He ended up not being credited with Juve’s equalizer, but he did play a part in it scoring. Outside of the one defensive mistake Bonucci played well today and helped create goal, so we’ll call him a slight positive for the day.

CB: Giorgio Chiellini 9/10

Juve’s new captain didn’t disappoint in his first game wearing the armband. He stayed solid at the back and fittingly assisted Juve’s first goal of the season. His most important contribution isn’t one that can be quantified, but with Buffon and Marchisio gone Giorgio Chiellini is the heart of this team. It’s that heart that keeps Juve fighting late in these kinds of games. The new captain put on his typical strong performance in the opener and as such, earned himself an A-.

RB: Joao Cancelo 4.5/10

Joao Cancelo’s Juventus debut will be a day he’ll hope to forget. Both Chievo goals were created on his side of the field. He made a terrible challenge to give Chievo their penalty. His only saving grace is that he arguably should’ve drawn a penalty of his own in the first half that could’ve put Juve in complete control of the game. Juve and Cancelo will be hoping this defensive performance was an anomaly and not the norm.
