Chelsea refused a Tottenham bid for Tammy Abraham on Deadline Day, but Mauricio Pochettino should try again when January arrives.

Tottenham’s quest to find a backup striker for Harry Kane took them to an odd place this summer. Spurs actually tried to pry Tammy Abraham away from Chelsea on Deadline Day. Predictably, the Blues refused their London rivals, but it’s an issue worth revisiting in January.

Goal reports that Spurs lodged a £25 million bid on the last day of the summer transfer window in an effort to bring Abraham to Hotspur Way. Neither Vincent Janssen or Fernando Llorente have proven worthy of providing cover for Kane during their Tottenham tenure. Pochettino should absolutely make it a priority to find another centre forward for the club as soon as possible.

As far as targets go, Abraham is pretty ambitious. Chelsea aren’t handing him much first team football at the moment, but they do rate him highly. At the very least, that means they’ll want to obtain a significant transfer fee if he does leave Stamford Bridge. The fact that he’s English only adds to his value.

In other words, Spurs are going to have to up their bid significantly in the future if they want to acquire the prolific striker. It’s very possible a bid upwards of £40 million will be required given the way the transfer market functioned this summer. Chelsea still might not accept that bid from Spurs, but it’s a move Tottenham should launch anyway.

There’s no real downside from the Spurs perspective. It’s not as if the idea of purchasing another striker is going to send Janssen or Llorente into a spiral. Pochettino has made it quite obvious that neither player is going to factor into his long-term plans. Bidding for Abraham shouldn’t change the mindset of either centre forward.

Even if the bid isn’t successful, it could force Chelsea’s hand with Abraham. He clearly wants to secure more playing time in the near future. If a club like Tottenham bid for his services it may turn his head. That, in and of itself, would be a win for Spurs in this scenario.

Next. Tottenham are prepared to make a massive gamble. dark

Ultimately, the chances of Abraham playing for Tottenham in the future are pretty slim, but it’s exactly the sort of signing Spurs should be trying to make. Look for the club to try to tempt Chelsea again when the winter transfer window opens.
