Tottenham will consider stripping Hugo Lloris of his captaincy
Tottenham won’t make any quick decisions regarding Hugo Lloris’ drink driving incident, but it’s possible he’ll lose the captain’s armband over the affair.
Hugo Lloris has been a model captain for Tottenham since Mauricio Pochettino bestowed the honor upon him. Unfortunately for the Frenchman, his recent brush with the law may cost him the captain’s armband for Spurs.
The 31-year-old keeper has been charged with drink driving after being pulled over by Charing Cross Police early on Friday morning. Lloris was released on bail after spending approximately seven hours in custody. The incident has the player’s place in Pochettino’s squad for the team’s upcoming fixture at Manchester United on Monday in jeopardy.
The foolish mistake may cost Lloris more than one match in goal though. Pochettino isn’t the sort of manager who will look kindly on a player making this type of mistake. In particular, the fact that Lloris was guilty of such indiscretion during the season will incense the Argentine gaffer. He loves Lloris, but he demands full commitment from everyone in the squad. Assuming Lloris is guilty of what he’s been charged with, Pochettino will deem that a serious lack of focus.
It may be enough to cost Lloris his captaincy. Giving that responsibility to a keeper is a rather unconventional choice in the first place. It made sense at Tottenham due to Lloris’ experience and longevity. It also was a reflection on the lack of qualified outfield options available to him early in his tenure in North London.
He’s not hindered by those issues any longer. If he were to choose another captain, he’d face a challenge picking from several qualified candidates. Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier would all fancy their chances at taking the responsibility on. Kane and Dier, in particular, have served in that capacity for England in the recent past.
Ultimately, if Lloris loses his captaincy it’s going to go to Kane. The prolific striker may still be relatively young, but he is Tottenham’s best, and most important player. Giving him the honour could do wonders to keep him with the club over the long haul.
Lloris’ indiscretion is going to cost him dearly in terms of his reputation, but it may cost him some status with Tottenham as well. Don’t be surprised if he loses his captaincy in the coming weeks.
