Tottenham’s bench can propel them past Manchester United
Tottenham fans aren’t used to having quality options on the bench. The club’s substitutes may be Spurs’ secret weapon against Manchester United.
You’ll have to forgive Tottenham supporters if they aren’t used to the idea of having quality options on the bench. Spurs have lost numerous matches over the past several seasons due to their lack of an impact substitute. Ironically, the club’s bench may be the key to Tottenham beating Manchester United on Monday.
Mauricio Pochettino doesn’t have the deepest squad in the Premier League, but he can field a really strong 18 when the majority of his players are healthy. He’ll still be missing Victor Wanyama this week, but every other important player is reasonably healthy. That will give him a ton of options at Old Trafford.
Specifically, there are two players who should really give Tottenham a lift when they come on against the Red Devils. The first is a very controversial player inside the club’s passionate fan base. Not every fan sees value in Erik Lamela, but Pochettino certainly does.
The talented Argentine is never going to replace Gareth Bale as he was intended to do, but he can be a really effective player. Presuming he doesn’t start on Monday, he should be the first attacker off of the substitute’s bench. Bringing him onto the pitch will allow Tottenham to give United real problems.
His piercing run against Fulham in the last match should remind all Spurs fans of what Lamela is capable of when he’s fit and firing. It was Lamela’s work that allowed Harry Kane to end his August hoodoo. His willingness to run at defenders with the ball at his feet can be a nightmare for tired defenders.
Lamela’s work rate also can help Tottenham see off matches where they enjoy a lead. Spurs may not have that luxury on Monday, but it’s a skill the player possesses. He’s got the ability to be a game changer when he’s introduced against Jose Mourinho’s squad.
The second, and more obvious substitute who should impact this match is Mousa Dembele. The talented Belgian is probably the club’s most effective holding midfielder, but he doesn’t have the stamina to play as a starter. That means he’s best suited to play as a super sub off the bench.
In a perfect world, Dembele will come on to help Spurs salt away their lead. His ability to control the ball in traffic is a huge asset for the club. He’s a particular threat to bother Paul Pogba in the middle of United’s formation. Again, Dembele can’t do that for 90 minutes, but he can manage the feat for 20 minutes or so.
The game plan for Spurs on Monday will be to grab an early lead and then use their depth to finish it off. Things may not go according to plan, but Pochettino’s bench will be a key boost for Tottenham in this big Premier League clash.
