FC Barcelona are brave to put such a low valuation on Paco Alcaer

It looks like Paco Alcaer will join Borussia Dortmund on a season-long loan, but are Barcelona right in including an option to buy?

Barcelona will send Paco Alcaer out on loan, in a bid for him to hone his skills in a different country. He has been pressurised to make a decision on his future, and Barca are willing to grant his request by sending him out on loan to Borussia Dortmund. According to Sport, the Spanish striker will travel to Germany in order to complete his medical.

His time in Catalonia has been nothing special, but he’s definitely shown signs of promise. He will have expected to have had a hard time breaking into the first team ahead of Luis Suarez, which is why it’s important for him to get minutes elsewhere. At the age of 24 years old, this is important for him heading into the serious stages of his career.

More from FC Barcelona

While many have been quick to write off his Barca career, I believe there’s a chance he can make it in La Liga. His style of play doesn’t match Suarez, but it never hurts to have a backup dynamic for when things aren’t going to plan.

The trait which Alcaer excels at is his linking of play. If the Spaniard was round during the Pep Guardiola days, this situation wouldn’t even be in question. He loves to play quick passes in and around the opposing box, for either himself or a teammate to finish. He also is a pretty impressive header of the ball, albeit not the typical target man.

This is why it surprises me to see Barcelona have included a pretty easy option to buy for Dortmund. When the Catalan club bought him back in 2016, the fee was around €32m, but now, according to Sport, Barca could lose him for around €25m. While his time has been disappointing, it’s not been *that* disappointing.

Should he excel at Dortmund, which could easily be the case, then Barca may regret this. BVB are desperate for a striker in the mold of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, after losing the Gabonese international to Arsenal last January. While I don’t think he’s up there yet, Alcaer will certainly strive to achieve such a stature.

Do you think FC Barcelona will regret including such a low option for Borussia Dortmund to buy?
