Atletico Madrid give Filipe Luis a strange ultimatum
By Matt English
Atletico Madrid are done fooling around with the possibility of a Filipe Luis transfer
Diego Simeone is not a manager that messes around. He will wear his passion on his sleeve, often going a bit overboard on the touch line. His no nonsense style fits very well at Atletico Madrid, as the club carries itself in a similar way.
This is evident in the most recent transfer debacle with defender Filipe Luis. The Brazilian has been consistently linked with a move away from Atletico, and the club has finally said enough is enough.

Sport has reported that, although Atletico does not want Filipe to leave, the club will let him go if they get the right price. It may seem like a logical statement, but it is quite odd for the club as a whole.
On one hand, saying they want to keep the player amidst the swirling transfer rumors is a great gesture. The club clearly values the player for what he has done since he rejoined back in 2015, so they want to put their trust in him.
On the other hand, they are also willing to part with the player should the right price come along. The reported £20-£30 million minimum that Atletico is searching for is sure to be met by big spenders PSG, who have been lumped in with many of the rumors this summer.
It is a complete contradiction to release a statement saying they want to keep Filipe Luis but also would not mind selling him. The club should stop toying with the media, the potential buyers, and most importantly, Filipe Luis himself.
Having been with the club for a total of seven years split into two stints, Filipe Luis should be getting more respect than that from Atletico. The club needs to either thank him for his services and sell him quickly, or put out a serious statement rejected further offers from any other club.
The fact that Atletico want to sell Filipe Luis, even for the right price, seems a bit strange at the moment. Although the transfer window is not closed, Atletico would only have one true left fullback should Filipe be sold.
The 442 that Simeone uses religiously requires a solid, smart, and talented fullback to keep the shape down both flanks. Relying on Lucas Hernandez, the clubs only other left fullback, to carry that weight the entire year is a big ask from the club.
Selling to PSG for a relatively hefty sum may seem like a good move for the club at the moment, but losing a player with the leadership and experience that Filipe has will come back to bite them. Challenging for the La Liga title and Champions League trophy will not be easy with just one left fullback, so Atletico need to make their next move wisely.
Do you think Atletico Madrid should sell Filipe Luis?
