Former Manchester United star heaps huge praise on Liverpool
By Kian Long
Manchester United have had a tough time lately, losing back-to-back games in the Premier League. Gerard Pique hasn’t forgotten about his former club…
A number of the Manchester United defenders aren’t cut out for the task. The likes of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof have had their fair share of spills already this season, with the defensive department proving a problem to the super club.
For a manager who relies on a strict defensive philosophy, this is never a good sign. And things are only going to get worse if the problem isn’t addressed soon. If Manchester United were able to keep Gerard Pique, then who knows what the scenario would have been?
The Catalan is consistently coming up with the goods for Barcelona, after joining from Manchester United in 2008. His time has been significantly better than it was in the English Premier League. While he won’t look back in anger, he did have a few words which may anger the Old Trafford faithful…
"“I think Jurgen Klopp is doing a great job at Liverpool. The style of play is the opposite of Guardiola. They like to counter attack and have very quick players up front who score goals.” – Gerard Pique (via Daily Star)"
This all stemmed from the defender being asked if he had any plans to join the Premier League or Manchester United again, in which his response was simple – No.
Although United have no plans to chase him, it could speak volumes to a number of their potential candidates. Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire have been strongly linked, and should they follow this news, they may also be swayed. After all, they are looking to reach the heights of Gerard Pique.
“I don’t think so, I’m very happy here.”
– Gerard Pique on a return to Manchester United
Manchester United fans are quick to pinpoint the blame on Jose Mourinho, and it’s not difficult to see why. The Portuguese boss has continued to make the worst out of his players, and it’s a gloomy start to a Premier League campaign.
The club showed signs of promise last season, falling second-fiddle to a rampant Manchester City side. Although their rivals in blue dominated, to finish second has warranted applauds from other clubs recently, even though it shouldn’t.
A change of defensive personnel, and a change at the helm will do United the world of good. They will need to wait until January at least for the former to be worked on, but with Zinedine Zidane interested in the opening, who knows what could happen…
Do you think Liverpool have more chance of catching up with City than United?
