Right back-Serge Aurier

Pochettino claims Kieran Trippier is fit and eligible for selection, but he did limp off the pitch in the second half at United. That should open the door for Aurier to make the start at Watford.

In many ways, the former PSG star is better suited to play for Pochettino in a back four. He’s a stronger, more athletic defender than Trippier. Aurier doesn’t provide the crossing threat that his English counterpart does, but that’s less important in this formation.

The key, as usual, for Aurier will be to avoid any glaring mental errors. If he does that, Spurs defence should be solid enough to earn all three points.

Left back-Ben Davies

Many Tottenham fans would prefer to see Danny Rose get another start here, but expect Pochettino to give Davies a chance to work his way back into the side. The Welshman has struggled mightily to start the season, but his play last season has earned him rope in his manager’s estimation.

The fact that Watford won’t really trouble the left flank with pace should work to Davies’ advantage in this match. This isn’t a match where he’ll be faced with a tricky winger. Davies should have enough athleticism to hold his own. If he doesn’t play a solid match against Watford, look or Rose to be installed as the team’s starter very soon.
