Juventus player ratings vs Parma: Matuidi shines as Ronaldo remains scoreless
By John Vaccaro
LB: Alex Sandro 7/10
Alex Sandro didn’t deliver anything spectacular against Parma, but he still made a nice contribution for Juve. He made a tackle, 2 interceptions, and a clearance and made was constantly active in Juve’s attack. He sent in 11 crosses, giving Parma something to deal with throughout the match. Sandro also had the benefit of being the full back Juve had to worry less about on a day the defense looked very vulnerable.
Sandro’s biggest contribution was starting the sequence that led to Matuidi’s goal. Overall his performance was as good as one could hope on a day the defense didn’t look great.
CB: Giorgio Chiellini 5.5/10
The match against Parma was a rarity for Giorgio Chiellini. He didn’t contribute much of anything for Juventus defensively, only registering one clearance. Saturday was a rare day that Chiellini wasn’t able to stabilize the Juve defense. He wasn’t awful, but there’s a higher standard for Chiellini.
When the defense struggles the Juve captain needs to pick the team up. He was unable to do that against Parma.
CB: Leonardo Bonnuci 7/10
Leonardo Bonucci’s Juve comeback continued at Parma on a day that shouldn’t be considered much more than a push for him. He was the better of Juve’s two CBs against Parma, but the defense as a whole was disappointing.
He contributed 2 interceptions and 3 clearances to the defensive effort, but on Chiellini’s rare bad days he needs to make a bigger impact. He did complete an impressive 95% of his passes, which brings his rating for this game up. Bonucci was alright, Saturday was just a day Juve could’ve used more than that from him.
RB: Juan Cuadrado 6/10
I’d like to start by saying that Juan Cuadrado’s rating for this match isn’t entirely his fault. He never should’ve been played at right back. This really seemed like Massimiliano Allegri forcing Cuadrado to play out of position to get him some playing time. It didn’t work. Cuadrado didn’t combine well with the wings and was a liability defensively.
He did have some bright moments. It was his cross that was poorly defended by Parma, leading to Mandzukic’s goal. He managed to send in 7 crosses and completed a high percentage of his passes. However, that was outweighed by the discomfort every Juve fan must have felt watching him defend. He allowed far too much space for a cross on the Gervinho goal and was the biggest liability to Juve when they tried to hold onto the lead late in the match. Saturday wasn’t the best day in Cuadrado’s Juve career.
