Arsenal were reported to be interested in Filipe Luis, however the interest doesn’t make sense to me.

Arsenal strengthened heavily this summer, bringing in five new names. While most of them have been working their way from the bench, the others were given an easy ride into the first team. It’s by no means a squad overhaul, but Emery certainly has depth.

That said, to see that Arsenal were eyeing a move for Filipe Luis confused me a little. There are a lot of factors to consider, though. First off, Arsenal’s aim is to attain a short-term replacement for Sead Kolasinac, whose season may be underwhelming due to his early injury.

But still, wouldn’t it be more beneficial for the Gunners to invest in youth? Many of their full-backs are ageing, so to bring in another 33 year old wouldn’t do much to help in the long-run. Nacho Monreal ages at 32, and Stephan Lichtsteiner at 34.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles can play at left-back, despite defense not being his most favorable area. He is also sidelined through injury, although his injury isn’t as problematic as Kolasinac’s.

Maitland-Niles is a real fan favorite already, with the fans knowing exactly what he can bring to the club. He is confident on the ball, and incredibly versatile when it comes to finding his place in the system. Emery hasn’t seen much of him, but I’m sure he’ll be impressed by what he’s seen so far.

Filipe Luis has experience at the top level, for sure. Having played for the Brazil national team, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea in his time, he’s bound to have picked up a thing or two. This could help the likes of Hector Bellerin, but Arsenal fans mustn’t make the same mistake they did with Stephan Lichtsteiner in thinking this is the be-all or end-all.

There are younger options on the market, with Arsenal having the means to find talent in Sven Mislintat. If Unai Emery does decide to sign Luis, then obviously, his call will be ten times better than mine, and I would look forward to seeing the Brazilian move back to London.
