Tottenham kept hold of all of their first team stars in the summer, but expect Mauricio Pochettino to make several changes in January.
Spurs are off to a reasonably good start to their 2018/19 campaign, but it’s clear Mauricio Pochettino will make some changes in January. The majority of the focus remains on who the club will purchase, but equal attention should be paid to the players who might leave Hotspur way during the winter transfer window.
Don’t expect any luminaries like Harry Kane or Dele Alli to be jettisoned. Instead of letting that type of talent leave, Daniel Levy and company are working hard to tie those players down with new contracts. There’s even recent optimism over the possibility that Toby Alderweireld will sign a new deal this year.
Instead, keep an eye on the fringes of the squad to see who might leave. We’ll start by highlighting a veteran striker who has no future at Tottenham.
5. Fernando Llorente
The venerable Spaniard has enjoyed an excellent clear, but he’s of no use to Pochettino. His lack of speed at the top of the Argentine’s press is maddening to watch. Llorente is still capable of scoring an occasional goal with his head, but that’s not enough to keep him in the Spurs squad.
The only real question surrounding Llorente is where he will go. The most likely salvation for him would be to return to Spain or Italy. The former would be best for his comfort level, but it’s Serie A that would fit his game the best. It’s still showcases a slower pace than the English Premier League.
Llorente won’t be sold for a massive fee, but the club will work hard to get him off their wage sheet in January. Don’t expect him to put up any sort of fight. He realizes his the reality of his current situation and will want a chance to play somewhere else.
