Tottenham continue to act like a club who aren’t satisfied with their options at left back. That could spell trouble for Danny Rose.

Danny Rose survive the summer to remain at Tottenham, but he may not be as lucky in January. The fact that Spurs continue to monitor a number of potential left back acquisitions should have the 27-year-old Englishman on high alert about his future at the club.

It’s an open secret that Tottenham made Ryan Sessegnon their top target this summer. Spurs were ultimately unable to pry him away from Fulham, but they worked hard to tempt the Whites into a deal. It’s very possible Mauricio Pochettino will try to test Fulham’s resolve again in January.

The recent news that Spurs continue to monitor the status of Leicester City left back Ben Chilwell only adds fuel to the notion that Rose’s days at the club are numbered. The 21-year-old fullback certainly fits the mold of what Pochettino wants from a player. He isn’t the best defender in Europe, but he’s a terrific talent going forward with the ball at his feet. Chilwell’s ceiling isn’t as high as Sessegnon’s, but he did just recently earn his first England cap.

Unfortunately for Spurs, Leicester City certainly know the player they have in Chilwell. If Tottenham are going to get a deal done, they’ll need to convince the player to push for the move. That’s going to be a tall task with multiple years remaining on Chilwell’s deal with the Foxes. Most observers expect next summer to be the first time another club has a legitimate chance of convincing Leicester City to sell.

The only good news for Rose is that he has several months to convince Pochettino that he’s the right player to man the position. Ben Davies’ dreadful start to the campaign has certainly opened the door for Rose to seize some meaningful playing time. It’s not out of the question that Rose can dislodge the Welshman as the club’s starter by the time January arrives.

If he wants to stay at Tottenham he’d be well served to do just that. As long as he continues to languish as the club’s second choice then Spurs will continue to explore younger, more dynamic options at the position. It may be now or never for Rose at Tottenham over the next few months.
