Manchester United demolish AS Roma

Manchester United 7-1 AS Roma (2006/07)

This was arguably the greatest Champions League night at Old Trafford as it saw Manchester United tear Italian side AS Roma apart to reach the semi finals in the 2006/07 season. The Red Devils had lost the first leg 2-1 but they replied in spectacular fashion to overturn the deficit and win 8-3 on aggregate.

United raced to a three goal lead inside the first 20 minutes, with Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney and Alan Smith all scoring. The unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo made it 4-0 on the stroke of half time, before adding another after 49 minutes. United’s onslaught showed no signs of stopping as Michael Carrick found the top corner with a stunning long range effort to make it 6-0 at the hour mark. Roma pulled one back through Daniele De Rossi, before substitute Patrice Evra completed the rout with a fine strike from the edge of the area.

The Red Devils played some of their best attacking football on that day and the Italian giants had no answer on how to stop them. It was one of the most dominant performances in the competition’s history, and it came when United were up against it at a crucial juncture of their season.

United absolutely obliterated Roma and the performance ranks as one of the best in the club’s storied history. Although Manchester United were eliminated by AC Milan in the semi finals, they tasted European success just one year later as they won the Champions League, beating Chelsea in the final.
