Tottenham player ratings at Inter: Based on this match, Ben Davies should never play again
If Ben Davies’ entire career was defined by his match at Inter Milan on Tuesday, the Tottenham defender would be playing Sunday League football.
It’s hard to describe Tottenham’s 2-1 loss at Inter yesterday as anything but a complete disaster. Spurs led the match 1-0 until Mauro Icardi tied it with a brilliant equalizer in the 85th minute. The squad fell apart after that and ultimately conceded the deciding goal in extra time.
Generally speaking, when we evaluate Tottenham performances there’s a certain measure of consistency within the squad. That wasn’t the case at Inter. Several Spurs put in brilliant shifts. Conversely, several players endured absolute horror shows.
Without further delay, let’s dive into which players are more responsible for the nightmare at San Siro. Some of the evaluations might surprise you.
Michel Vorm-8
The narrative that Vorm’s questionable keeping is costing Tottenham points has to stop after his effort on Tuesday. He was really good in this match. He wasn’t called on to make a ton of stops, but he commanded the box with authority.
Simply put, he corrected the mistakes he made against Liverpool. That means Vorm had one of his better outings in recent memory. There was absolutely nothing he could do about either goal. The Dutch keeper deserved better.
Serge Aurier-8.5
Aurier is another player who draws entirely too much stick from Spurs fans on social media. He was our Man of the Match in this one. The former PSG star put on a masterful performance on both ends of the pitch.
Defensively, he did a remarkably job of keeping Ivan Perisic quiet. Instead, he forced the Croatian to spend a ton of time defending until he was subbed off in the second half. Kieran Trippier should be very concerned about his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad.
Ben Davies-2
In all honesty, Davies played one of the worst matches we’ve seen at Tottenham in recent memory. He was an absolute mess. Time and time again he was beaten down the left flank by Matteo Politano. He was equally bad on the rare occasions he ventured up field.
There’s no way he can keep his starting spot over Danny Rose if he continues to play like this. Kyle Walker-Peters would have been a better option on Tuesday. Davies was ghastly.
