Juventus player ratings vs Valencia: Juve overcomes Ronaldo red card
By John Vaccaro
Emre Can 6.5/10
Can came on early in the match when Khedira was forced to leave with a hamstring injury. He really should’ve been the starter, but wasn’t able to make his presence felt in the match. He provides more going forward than Khedira, but was only on the field for about 7 minutes where Juve was at full strength. He was able to make a defensive contribution with a tackle, an interception, and 2 clearances, but it wasn’t enough for him to take over that starting role long term. If Khedira’s injury keeps him out for an extended period it will give Can a chance to establish himself, but he will need to play better to keep himself to take Khedira’s spot.

Douglas Costa 6/10
It hasn’t been a good few days for Costa. He was handed a 4 match ban for spitting on Federico Di Francesco (although the true circumstances of the incident are still up for debate). Against Valencia he wasn’t able to give fans a reason to talk about anything else. He didn’t have much impact before leaving with an injury 22 minutes into his appearance. He did have one chance to score on a breakaway, but wasn’t able to convert. It was a less than memorable day and he could now have an injury to deal with on top of his suspension.
Daniele Rugani: Inc.
Rugani’s 8 minutes weren’t enough to give him a grade. He gave away a penalty late in the match, but it wasn’t a clear call and he didn’t really have time to do anything else while on the pitch. Overall just not enough to judge him on. It was good to see Allegri actually get him on the pitch though.
Manager: Massimiliano Allegri 9.5/10
This was a great match for Allegri. He chose the right formation and almost put out the perfect lineup. Khedira was the wrong choice in the midfield, but being able to keep his team going after the early adversity was a point in Allegri’s favor. He was forced into two of his substitutions, but made the right call with all three of his changes. If Allegri keeps sending out this lineup the rest of the Champions League run, but just starts Can instead of Khedira he will gain the confidence of a lot of Juve fans.
It was a good start for him as he continues to work to bring home Juve’s first Champions League title in over 2 decades.
