CB: Medhi Benatia

Benatia got the start last weekend as Juve got ready for their Champions League match and I believe he should get another between the Valencia match and another Wednesday match against Bologna. Benatia was a big piece of Juve’s success last season and played well in his first start of the year against Sassuolo. His five interceptions kept a Sassuolo attack that is leading Serie A in scoring off balance throughout the match.

Unfortunately for Benatia, he doesn’t have a clear path to a starting spot this season, but he can carve himself out a very important rotational role. Starting Benatia when you need to rotate Chiellini and Bonucci out is a pretty nice option to have for Juve.

CB: Daniele Rugani

I thought Rugani would get the start last weekend against Sassuolo, but Massimiliano Allegri decided to only rotate out one of his two usual center backs. However, we did get to see Rugani make his season debut this week. Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite what Rugani or Juventus fans would’ve been hoping for. He appeared for 8 minutes and in that time his only impact was surrendering a penalty and receiving a yellow card.

Daniele Rugani is Juve’s only center back under the age of 30. As such, Juventus needs to take whatever opportunities they can to give him playing time. An in-form Rugani can be a major asset for Juventus and won’t be as susceptible to the disappointment of his performance against Valencia. This would be a perfect chance to give the future of Juve’s defense some playing time.
