Tottenham want to sign another Brazilian attacker in January
Frenkie de Jong isn’t the only Ajax starlet in Tottenham’s crosshairs. Spurs want to sign David Neres when the January transfer window opens.
The acquisition of Lucas Moura is paying big dividends for Tottenham this season. Evidently, Mauricio Pochettino likes the idea of adding some more Brazilian flair to his Spurs squad. That’s why he wants to bring Ajax starlet David Neres to North London this January.
Reports from England claim that Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea are all interested in the 21-year-old’s services. The higher-ups at Spurs will hope their previous dealings with Ajax will give them an advantage if a bidding war emerges. Neres might also be more inclined to move to Tottenham given the success of his countryman, Lucas, and several former Ajax stars who’ve successfully carved out a place in Pochettino’s squad.
Tottenham’s interest could present Neres with a difficult decision. He’s one of Ajax’s main men this season. If he moves to the Premier League in the middle of the year, it’s very possible he’ll spend most of his time on Tottenham’s bench. More established stars have shown it can take a full half season to adjust to life in England.
It’s also a fair question to ask whether or not he’s better than Pochettino’s current attacking options. Christian Eriksen, Heung-Min Son, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Lucas all appear to be firmly entrenched in their manager’s squad. It’s highly unlikely Neres is going to displace one of those stars right away. This seems like a purchase to help boost Tottenham’s future. Neres likely isn’t ready to help the club immediately.
That’s why Spurs fans should be on the lookout for a possible purchase in January with an agreement to let Neres finish the season with Ajax. That will make the Eredivisie club much more likely to agree to a sale. It would also allow Neres to continue to receive regular playing time before he gets a full preseason to work with Pochettino.
Even if that’s the tact Tottenham choose to employ, purchasing Neres would be a savvy move for the club. He’s just the sort of bright, young attacking talent that Tottenham need to add to their pipeline. He has the ability to grow into a Premier League star. Spurs need every player with that kind of talent they can get their hands on.
